Ethiopia’s national parks stretch from afro-alpine cliffs to tropical lowland wilderness. Endemic wolves and geladas, elephants and Swayne’s hartebeest, coffee forests and remote river valleys — each park is a different chapter of the country’s natural story.

Most travelers pair one or two parks with a cultural or historical route: Simien with the northern circuit, Bale with birding or coffee country, Nechisar and Mago with southern Omo Valley journeys.

The Ethiopian wolf

The Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis) — sometimes called the Simien fox or red jackal — is Africa's rarest canid and found nowhere else on Earth. Fewer than 500 adults survive in isolated afroalpine ranges, with Bale and Simien Mountains among the best places to search on a private park itinerary.

The Ethiopian wolf is endemic to Ethiopia's afroalpine highlands — not a red fox, but a distinct wolf species and one of the world's rarest wild dogs. Most sightings come from Bale and Simien Mountains National Parks on private itineraries with Lalibela Expeditions.

Chebera Churchura National Park is one of Ethiopia’s most pristine and wildlife-rich natural sanctuaries, known especially for having the largest remaining population of African elephants in the country.
