Ethiopian Airlines and AfDB to build Africa’s largest airport

In a bold step toward transforming the African aviation landscape, Ethiopian Airlines has announced a strategic partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to develop Africa’s largest airport. This visionary infrastructure project is expected to strengthen Ethiopia’s position as a continental and global aviation hub while significantly enhancing air travel capacity, connectivity, and economic opportunity throughout the region.

A Transformative Vision

The proposed mega airport, to be located in Bishoftu (about 39 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa), will span more than 35 square kilometers and have the capacity to handle 100 million passengers annually a substantial leap from the current capacity of Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. With state of the art technology, modern terminals, and sustainable design elements, the airport will rival major global aviation hubs in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Strategic Partnership with AfDB

The African Development Bank’s involvement brings both credibility and financial muscle to the initiative. The AfDB’s support ensures that the project will not only be completed with international standards but also align with broader African development goals, including job creation, regional integration, and sustainable growth.

AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina hailed the partnership, noting that “this project will redefine air connectivity across Africa and create a new economic corridor, strengthening intra-African trade and tourism.”

Boosting Ethiopia's Economy and Aviation Sector

As Africa's most successful airline, Ethiopian Airlines has long played a pivotal role in connecting African countries and opening up international routes. This new airport will serve as a launchpad for expanding operations, accommodating future growth, and supporting Ethiopia’s ambition to become the aviation gateway to Africa.

The construction phase alone is projected to create tens of thousands of jobs, with long-term employment opportunities in logistics, hospitality, retail, and airline services once the airport becomes operational.

Why It Matters for Africa

This project marks a significant step in Africa's infrastructural modernization. By addressing air traffic congestion and enabling smoother passenger flows, the new airport is expected to:

  • Increase intra-African trade and investment.

  • Strengthen tourism and cultural exchange.

  • Encourage foreign direct investment (FDI) in Ethiopia and beyond.

  • Elevate Africa’s global competitiveness in aviation and logistics.

Looking Ahead

While challenges such as financing, environmental concerns, and logistics are expected, the commitment by Ethiopian Airlines and AfDB signals strong determination to see the project through. The airport is anticipated to be completed in phases over the next decade, with the first phase expected to be operational by 2030.

As Africa continues to rise, infrastructure projects like this are vital pillars for sustained growth. With this partnership, Ethiopian Airlines and AfDB are not just building an airport they're building the future of African aviation
